It is a kind of singing drama which is an ingenious and colorful combination of elements from many sources: traditional music, poetry, singing, recitation, dancing, acrobatics, and martial arts. The types of role of Peking Opera fall into sheng who are the leading male actors playing scholars, officials, warriors and the like, dan who are the female roles, jing who are the painted-face roles representing warriors, heroes, statesmen, adventurers and demons, and chou who is basically the clown.
